Poovalur Srinivasan

Srinivasan came to California in 1986 to accept a teaching position in the music department of San Diego State University. During his stay as lecturer, he visited all of the San Diego City Schools to demonstrate and lecture on Indian music for the students in the gifted and academically talented education programs. He is currently a faculty member at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles and the University of North Texas in Denton. Srinivasan studied Mridangam under his father, the late Sri Puvalur Venkataraman. He has accompanied such artists as Emani Sankara Sastry, Alathur, Lalgudi, T. N. Krishnan, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Dr. L. Shankar, K. J. Yesudoss, Dr. N. Ramani to Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Conners and David Idalgo. In addition to pursuing his devotion to music, Srinivasan also received a Degree in Philosophy from Madras University.

He has been a winner of the Henry Cowell Prize, Madras Music Academy Best Mridangist, and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha Award from the Historical Cultural Society of Orange County. He is an active radio performer, has toured widely with Carnatic classical musicians , has performed with symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Europe and worked with jazz fusion ensembles.
